Starlight downloads are easy to misunderstand because source archives, compiled mod JARs and third-party mirrors can all use similar names. The homepage button on this site intentionally points to the archived Fabric-branch source ZIP, not to a ready-to-run mod file.
What the provided download is
The file is the archived Fabric branch from the original PaperMC/Starlight source repository. It is useful for reviewing code, preserving the project and understanding build structure.
What the provided download is not
It is not an official 1.21.x build, not a universal Fabric file, not a Forge release and not a JAR that should be copied directly into the mods folder.
How historical release names were structured
Public Fabric releases use names such as Starlight 1.1.3 for Minecraft 1.20.4, while Forge has its own loader-specific 1.1.3 build for Minecraft 1.20.2. Similar version numbers do not mean the loader files are interchangeable.
Check three values before installation
Match the Minecraft patch, loader family and Starlight release. If one of those three is unknown, stop before launching an important world.
Avoid random “latest” mirrors
The original project is archived, so a page that advertises an “official latest 1.21.11 Starlight” should be treated skeptically until the project identity is proven. A new upload date does not make an unrelated fork official.
Keep backups outside the instance
Store at least one world backup somewhere the launcher or modpack manager will not modify. Low-level engine changes deserve a rollback path that survives a broken profile.
